Malawi - National Digital Repository (NDR)

Through its Mobilising Knowledge for Development (MK4D) Programme, the Institute of Development Studies (IDS, UK) collaborated with the National Library Service of Malawi (NLS) to support the establishment of a National Digital Repository of Research for Malawi. The repository was established in 2011 and is jointly managed by NLS, the Malawi Library and Information Consortium (MALICO) and the National Commission of Science and Technology (NCST).

Aims

  • To raise the visibility of outputs from Malawian research institutions and to build their capacities in global knowledge sharing.
  • To increase the accessibility and profile of current research outputs and their impact on national and regional development, accelerate innovations, help to shape more effective government polices and bring transparency to research institutions

Themes

NDR has research documents on themes like: Agriculture, Aid and debt, Biological sciences , Business and accountancy, Chemistry, Children and young people, Climate change, Culture, Education, Engineering sciences, Environment, Finance policy, Food security, Gender , Governance, Governance Assessments, Health, Health systems, HIV/AIDS, and Humanities.

The MDE and NDR are now merged and work as a joint initiative which aims to become a global information research hub that stimulates demand for and provide access to Malawian research and raises the visibility of Malawian knowledge for poverty reduction.(MDE, Established in 2009, MDE is an online social networking platform that facilitates the exchange of development focused news and research produced in Malawi for free. The MDE is collaborative project between IDS Knowledge Services (IDS-KS) and the National Library Service of Malawi (NLS) in Lilongwe, Malawi).
